  2. Gedcom
  3.  
  4.         GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunication.  It is a
  5. standard by which genealogical information can be transferred between
  6. different computer systems.  It was developed by the Projects and
  7. Planning Division in the Family History Department of The Church of
  8. Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  9.  
  10.         With gedcom, you can trade information with other people who are
  11. doing genealogical research, provided that their program also supports
  12. it.  Family Scrapbook supports the PAF v2.1/v2.2 implementation of
  13. gedcom, but also uses many of the tags that are found in the Gedcom
  14. Standard Release 4.0.  Many other genealogy programs support gedcom.

  16.         Family Scrapbook is capable of exporting and importing all of
  17. its data via its gedcom routines.  To do this, Family Scrapbook uses
  18. many gedcom tags that are often not used by most other genealogy
  19. programs.  Do not be surprised if another genealogy program does not
  20. import all of the information that a scrapbook-created gedcom file
  21. contains.  For instance, if another program has no place for entering
  22. census information, it is likely that it will completely ignore that
  23. kind of information if it is in a gedcom file.  Family Scrapbook offers
  24. you many options during the creation of gedcom files so that you have
  25. maximum flexibility when trading your data with others.

  27.         Note:  The gedcom routines are contained in an external
  28. executable file named FSGED.EXE.  This file can be run directly from DOS
  29. provided that Family Scrapbook has been run at least once to create the
  30. data files.
